How Can Sedation Dentistry Help Me?

Dental anxieties are common and nothing to be ashamed of. To make you more comfortable, sedation dentistry offers quick and precise anxiety relief during your procedure. Administered intravenously, Oral and IV sedation is beneficial for those with dental fears or undergoing extensive treatments, providing a relaxed experience and often leading to limited recollection of the procedure.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

  • Blue checkmark Reduced anxiety

    Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly called happy gas or laughing gas, is used to alleviate anxiety during dental treatment. Administered through a small nosepiece, you remain awake throughout the entire treatment procedure.

  • Blue checkmark Keeps you calm

    Oral Conscious Sedation

This involves a doctor-prescribed prescription for multiple sedative pills. Sedative medication is taken the night before and the morning of your procedure, ensuring your comfort throughout the entire treatment process.

  • Blue checkmark Eases discomfort

    IV Sedation

This involves intravenously administering sedatives to put you in a diminished state of consciousness throughout the procedure. This approach has other benefits, including reducing post-operative swelling and pain.

team for more information.

  • Q: Is sedation dentistry safe?

Sedation is very safe, and our team is extensively trained to care for sedated patients. Medications used have proven safety records, and sedatives are only administered by certified dentists. You’ll only be released when it’s safe for you to go home.

  • Q: How is the medication administered?

Oral sedation is administered via a pill taken under the tongue.

IV sedation is administered by a trained anesthesia provider who will insert a thin needle into a vein on your hand or arm. This needle is linked to an intravenous tube, facilitating the direct delivery of the sedative into the bloodstream. For those uneasy about needles, a numbing cream may be applied to the needle entry point.

  • Q: Will I be asleep during the appointment?

Oral sedation does not put you asleep, with IV sedation you will be asleep.

Oral sedation puts you in a semi-conscious state, making you unaware of what’s happening around you. However, you will still be able to respond to your dentist’s verbal commands or light touches.

When the sedative takes effect, patients generally feel deeply relaxed, in an almost dream-like state. Most patients remember very little of their procedure and were unaware of how much time had passed.

Patients who elect for IV sedation will be asleep.

  • Q: How long will I be sedated?

The primary effects of sedation will last for approximately 12 hours. You’ll likely feel drowsy immediately after the procedure, so you’ll need a chaperone to pick you up from the dental office.

  • Q: How should I prepare for sedation?

    Ahead of sedation, you should:

    • Avoid eating or drinking 10 hours before your appointment.
    • Take your normal medication with a sip of water unless instructed otherwise.
    • Wear comfortable clothing, but no jewelry, nail polish, or contact lenses.
    • Brush your teeth before your procedure.
  • Q: Will I feel any pain?

No. During your dental procedure the dentist with use local anesthesia and you should not experience pain during your dental procedure. You can expect to feel very comfortable and at ease, and may not even remember the treatment after the sedative has worn off.
